Our 2021 UWC Toronto Scholarships were awarded to the following young women:

 

Seemal Sipra - Bloor Collegiate Institute

Seemal has made the Principal’s List for high academic standing for all four years at Bloor. Not only is she academically sound but she has spent countless hours developing a program of virtual tutoring during COVID. She displays leadership as she works with equity issues, student voice and homelessness.  Seemal also volunteers in the community at the Yonge St. Mission, the Art City in the St. James Town Neighborhood and the Toronto Public Library. She will be studying Engineering at University of Toronto.

 

Bethelem Charles - Central Toronto Academy

Bethelem is one of our UWC Toronto scholarship recipients and the winner of our one time Susan Freeman Scholarship. She has continued to attain an A plus average in Advanced Placement courses in science, arts and sports as well as committing more than 500 hours of volunteer service. She would like to become a neuro-engineer and will be continuing to mentor young black women in STEM subjects. Bethelem had many program options but has chosen to attend the University of Toronto for Engineering.

 

Ummalhair Owolewa - Central Technical School

Ummalhair continues to have an academic performance that is noteworthy but it is her commitment to her community that is truly remarkable. She volunteers to support newcomers to Canada and started an after-school tutoring group in her shelter to help other students by providing homework support and activities to help them cope. Ummalhair has her sights set on becoming a doctor and will be attending Trent University to study Biology.

 

Mouna Aden - Harbord Collegiate Institute

Mouna is not only a very strong academic student but also a very committed activist and advocate for the voices of black students. She created and led a student committee, wrote to the education minister and is still in conversation with the deputy minister.  She intends to become a pediatrician and serve in low-income areas. She received one of the very prestigious and extremely sought after Princess Margaret Co-op placements. Mouna will be attending York University for Biomedical Science.

 

Mary Cate Faulkner - Malvern Collegiate Institute

Mary Cate has proven herself to be an exceptional academic student as well as excelling in providing leadership in many school activities ranging from business to engineering. She has proven she can lead and bring about a sense of inclusiveness with her peers. On top of working part-time as a frontline worker, she devotes countless hours acting as a camp counsellor and swimming instructor at Variety Village. Mary Cate will be studying Business Management in the Commerce Department at Ryerson University.

 

Laura- Tran Nguyen - Parkdale Collegiate Institute

Laura-Tran is an honour student and has held significant leadership positions in her years at Parkdale. She has been involved as an active member in a wide variety of school activities as well as those in her family of schools, the local community and church. Laura-Tran is a dedicated leader and role model in the Peer/Tutoring program for grade 9 students. She will be studying in the Social Sciences Program in Economics at the University of Toronto.

 

MARY MACDONALD SCHOLARSHIP

 

Angelica Treleven - York Memorial Collegiate Institute

Angelica is in the top 2% academically of all students at YMCI and will be studying Chemistry at Ryerson this fall. But, it is her dedication and service to others that sets her apart. She tutors in math and the sciences and provides students with activities to provide mental health support by staying connected to their school community. She is well rounded young woman participating in environmental, sports and arts clubs at the school. In her own words she has “learned to lead respectfully and harmoniously.” In the words of her referee, “she is hardworking, optimistic, organized, engaging and a joy to work with. Angelica refuses to be defined by her personal or financial struggles.

A very deserving Mary Macdonald Scholarship recipient indeed!
