ADVOCACY

The University Women’s Club of Toronto’s Advocacy Committee seeks to improve the lives of women and girls through our support for social programs and learning opportunities. Guided by the UWC Board of Directors, our advocacy work focuses on:

  • increasing issue awareness

  • creating opportunities

  • raising our voices

  • responding through community work

  • delivering philanthropic endeavours

  • influencing decision makers

Objectives and Goals

The Advocacy Committee fulfills its mission by:

  • Being comprised of women who have an interest in improving the lives of women and girls, by supporting learning opportunities through advocacy projects and initiatives.

  • Ensuring that our goals align with the UWC’s purpose, stated as “dedicated to advancing the status of women and supporting the education of women and girls,” and reflects the concerns of the UWC membership.

  • Prioritizing projects and initiatives that address the welfare of women and girls on the margins.

  • Monitoring issues that impact women and girls, and provide advice to UWC Board, and recommending issues that merit attention, involvement and response. We will also consider supporting projects or initiatives affecting the lives of women and girls beyond our local community.

humewood house

On Tuesday, November 2nd, the Advocacy Committee and guests attended our first visit to Humewood House. We learned about the various programs they’ve created in early childhood education, child development, mental health and therapy services, as well as their high school curriculums and classrooms.

advocacy and action committee poinsettia sale

The Advocacy and Action Committee of the UWC Toronto sold poinsettias and other seasonal flowers in December 2020.  The money raised by this sale was used to help women on the margins with the difficulties often encountered when finding a place to live.

We would like to give a thunderous round of applause to Lily for all of her amazing hard work with the Advocacy Christmas Flowers. She picked up carloads at 6 a.m., stored them all in her house, sorted and wrapped. She is amazing and did a miraculous job. Thank you so much. Our own Christmas miracle. Thanks also to her daughters, Julia and Katherine, to the drivers and runners: Terry, Wendy, Susan LeRoy, Mary Jane, Cecelia and Jo-Lynne… It has been such a resounding success. Thank you, Lily
